Miss Capital City's Teen 2023 Elly Rowan

Capital City’s Outstanding Teen Elly Rowan developed Got Grit to teach people the importance of grit and a growth mindset. As a student, athlete, and musician, she has used grit to achieve success. She sets goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based (SMART) and teaches how to do this in her workshops. A personal example of how Elly had to use grit in her own life is when a torn ACL injury sidelined her from soccer and basketball. She used grit to recover, relearn how to walk, and grow her muscle strength.
Elly aspires to own her own music studio someday. One of her first big purchases was her own ukulele which inspired her to create her social impact initiative. As a volunteer with Music Link Foundation, she learned many facets of a non-profit organization, including fundraising and putting on performances. She has hosted and performed at Music Link events that feature young students who have benefited from the program in public performances. Elly performs in her church worship band, at The Waters Senior Living Facility, at local restaurants, and in her private lesson studio. She was a semi-finalist at the Minnesota State Fair talent contest twice: once she posed a triple threat by singing and playing ukulele on roller skates.
Elly leads a very active lifestyle playing soccer and basketball. She made the Hill-Murray JV basketball as a freshman and sophomore and was on the JV soccer team her freshman year. Having to take a break from high school and club soccer is disappointing due to her injury, but she hopes to be back on the field soon. Elly has enjoyed being a member of Salvo Soccer Club since she was in elementary school and remembers her days on traveling basketball teams fondly. She even received her certification to referee soccer so she could get a part-time job with Salvo Soccer.
She juggles a busy schedule at school: she represents her class in student council, is a member of campus ministries, sings in the select choir Pioneers Performers, and made it to DECA state finals for interview in ninth grade and human resources role play as a sophomore. She loves being part of the theater cast and appeared in All Shook Up and Joseph. She won Battle of the Books three times and twice was named the science student of the month. She takes college preparatory honors courses, yet still maintains a 4.05 GPA.
Other interests include crossword puzzles and travel. She's almost halfway through the 50 states. Her favorite thing about Minnesota is the snow!
