Competition Information
Miss Chain of Lakes/Miss Capital City is a preliminary competition to the Miss Minnesota competition, part of the Miss America Organization. Each candidate must meet the eligibility requirements to compete in the 4 areas of competition listed below.
The winners of Miss Chain of Lakes/Miss Capital City receive sponsorship to the state competition, preparation support, and an educational scholarship (payable directly to a student loan or school tuition).

Areas of Competition
Personal Interview: 35% of score
The panel of judges meet each candidate for a private interview. The judges will ask questions for 9 minutes and 30 seconds. After the 9.5 minutes are complete, the candidate has the option in the last 30 seconds to expand on an area of the interview, or highlight something that did not get covered in the interview.
Candidate shows her ability to think on her feet with a question given to her on-stage in a 30 second response. The question is from one of the judges in continuation of what was discussed in the earlier personal interview. After she has answered the question, she gives a 45 second social impact pitch.
Each candidate presents a 90 second talent piece of her choice that falls within the Miss America guidelines (no projectiles, must be performed within auditorium, etc.). Common talents include vocal, dance, monologue, instrumental, etc.
Each candidate demonstrates her unique style and personality through her grace and presence in an evening wear of her choosing. Think red carpet glamour when selecting wardrobe, but not limited to an evening gown.

- Allows insight into the candidate’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities outlined in the job description and contract
- Provides the opportunity to learn as much as possible about the candidate’s qualities and attributes to fulfill the titleholder position
- Allows insight into the commitment to advance and execute on her social impact initiative and have a year of service - not celebrity
- Allows insight into the commitment to continue her education
- Allows insight into the ability to express and distinguish her beliefs and have a true knowledge of the world around her
- Ability to get sense of accomplishments above and beyond the resume

- Advancing the same criteria as the personal interview by bringing it on stage in an interactive energetic way to showcase each candidates’ intelligence, personality, charisma, and aptitude for the titleholder job
- Allows audiences to truly get to know the candidate
- Allows ability to see how these discussions take place in a public forum showcasing the greater ability to communicate., stage presence, commanding presence, and "relatability"
- Allows ability to judge first impression reaction
- Allows ability to determine if the candidate cannot simply answer the question asked, but build on a conversation from the personal interview
- Allows the ability to see interactivity and discussion
- Allows the ability to see if candidate can serve as a role model and is reflective of her generation

- Looks at selection of talent presentation, as well as the performance
- Looks at interpretive ability and technical skill level including execution, technique synchronization, and control
- Allows insight into stage presence and on-state personality
- Allows a look at the totality of the elements; Costume, Props, Music, Voice, Use of the Body, and Choreography
- Looks for how enjoyable and relatable the performance is
Each candidate demonstrates her unique style and personality through her grace and presence in an evening wear of her choosing. Think red carpet glamour when selecting wardrobe, but not limited to an evening gown.
- Allows a look into a how the candidate exhibits her own personal style, attitude, personality, grace, presence, and confidence while making her own statement about her mission for the job.
- Allows a look into composure, confidence, the attention she captures on the stage, her command of the stage, presence, and how she appears in the spotlight
- Allows ability to judge first impression reaction
- Allows a look at posture and carriage
- Allows a chance to hear a candidate’s presentation of her social impact initiative for social media in a different setting
Requirements
- Residency: Must be a U.S. citizen and residency in Minnesota for at least 30 days prior to January 7, 2023. Residency is defined as the primary address where you physically live. Verification of residency may be shown with a driver license, automobile registration, property mortgage or lease in your name, tax filings, etc.
- Age: At least 19 years old and no more than 26 years old as of December 31, 2023
- School Status: High school graduate or successfully completed G.E.D. by the Miss Minnesota competition date
- Additional requirements can be found in candidate local contract.
